BACKGROUND
Philip was admitted to the Bar in 1977. After periods of employment in law firms in Palmerston North, London and Auckland came to Hamilton in 1983 where he worked as a Crown prosecutor in the Crown Solicitors office. He was a partner in that firm from 1985 to 1998.
Philip went to the independent Bar on 1 July 1998 and was appointed Silk in June 2003.
He has represented clients from all areas of life including Plaintiffs and Defendants in civil proceedings, parties in relationship property proceedings, the Crown in criminal trials and the defence in criminal trials, both jury and Judge alone. He has regularly appeared in all types of cases in the High Court and the Court of Appeal.
CAREER HIGHLIGHTS
A member of the firm of Solicitors represented Fowzi Bhedavi Nejad, the surviving terrorist from the hostage drama at the Iranian Embassy in London in 1981.
Prosecution of serious criminal offending in the Hamilton and Waikato 1983 to 1998.
Civil litigation in the High Court, 1998 to the present day, criminal defence work in the District Court and High Court 1983 to the present day.
Crown prosecutor for the retrial of Mark Lundy in 2015.
AREAS OF PRACTICE
Philip does not limit his field of practice to any particular area. His expertise is the conduct of defended cases before any Tribunal of a serious and complex kind. They have included general civil, restraint of trade, judicial review, intellectual property, family protection.
